I got my first Border Collie soon after I got my first sheep. I saw a man named Buddy Brackin from Town Creek Alabama use his dogs in a live Nativity that we were both in 1989 and I bought a pup from him in 1990. Bud (the Border Collie) went with me to Mississippi State and we both learned a great deal from a super dog man (and sheep man too) Dr. Leroy Boyd. Doc took me under his wing and helped me in more ways than I have time to mention. I have not been without a Border Collie since and I have become friends with a tremendous set of people that work dogs. I have gone through a number of dogs over the years and even trained some for the public, when I had more free time. The working Border Collie is a pleasure to be around and amazing to watch. They can read livestock so much better than any person and are athletic things of beauty. I currently have two Border Collies and my youngest son Tom has one.
I had a horse or two as a kid but was not ever really a horse person. I did find a donkey or two that I got along with fairly well and since they helped keep predators away from my sheep and goats, it was advantageous to keep them.
I found that the draft horse breeds had a personality that fit mine best and I have had a pair of percherons and a pair of Belgians. Now we have a herd of donkeys (Three that will ride or work). We have had more horses and mules but they were needed in other places and have found new homes.
